The Forest's signature move

Downsizing out of the family home

Around here it is the move that matters most: twenty-five, thirty, forty years in the one split-level, and now the house is sold and a date is set. It deserves a crew that treats the contents like a lifetime rather than a load, and a clock nobody has to fear.

The sorting is yours; the pace and the care are ours. Nobody gets rushed.

Why this move is different, and why we treat it that way

A downsizing move is really three moves wearing one date. Some things go to the new place. Some go to family, often across Sydney. Some go to donation or simply go. Most removalists quote it like a house move with fewer boxes; it is usually the opposite, a smaller destination and a bigger set of decisions.

So we run it differently:

  • Sequenced, not swept. We plan the day around your sort: keep-pile first, family pieces set aside and labelled by name, donation load last. Nothing leaves a room until its pile is certain.
  • Paced by you, priced by the hour. The rate is the rate whether the day is quick or careful. There is no penalty for taking a moment over a box of photographs, and no crew of ours will ever hover over one.
  • Split destinations are normal. A run to a son's place in Frenchs Forest or a donation drop on the way is planned into the route, not treated as a favour.
  • The heavy history is our problem. Pianos, wall units, the table that seated every Christmas: wrapped properly, carried by enough hands, and set down where it belongs next.

You are not moving out of a house. You are choosing what forty years gets to come next. Our job is to make the carrying the easy part.

The crew that fits

Most Forest downsizing jobs run with 3 movers and a truck at $350 an hour. When the family home is a big four-plus-bedroom split-level, 4 movers and two trucks at $500 an hour usually finishes sooner and gentler, because nobody is carrying tired. The callback settles it honestly before you book.

Before the crew arrives

The single best thing you can do is decide the piles before moving day, not during it. Our guide, Downsizing the family home after decades, walks the sequence room by room: what to decide early, what can wait, and the questions that make the day simple.

Packing help is its own careful service too, often booked for the day before: Packing & wrapping.
